alabama contractors license This license includes the construction of any residence or structure which is not over 3 stories in height and which does not have more than 4 units in an apartment complex. One who constructs a residence or structure for sale or who, for a fixed price, commission, fee, or wage, undertakes or offers to undertake the construction or superintending of the construction, or who manages, supervises, assists, or provides consultation to a homeowner regarding the construction or superintending of the construction, of any residence or structure which is not over three floors in height and which does not have more than four units in an apartment complex, or the repair, improvement, or reimprovement thereof, to be used by another as a residence when the cost of the undertaking exceeds ten thousand dollars ($10,000).

If you're the general contractor on a residential project that costs $10,000 or more, you need a license. Be sure to state whether you are requesting an unlimited license application package or a limited license application package. Applicants are required to submit a credit report and document experience on the application. In order to receive an Unlimited License, take and pass the Alabama Home Builders Exam. Alabama Contractors Fees

 

contractors license feesComplete the appropriate application form and return the notarized application with a check or money order made payable to the Home Builders Licensure Board in the amount of $350.00 ($250 license fee and $100 new application processing fee). Applications must be received at least 30 days prior to regular board meeting dates in order to be reviewed at that meeting. The Board meets once per month. The processing time is approximately 60 days. The fee for the Home Builders exam is $98. Licensing fees may differ according to each classification.

Applicants are not required to pass a separate Business Law exam because it is included in the Alabama Homebuilder exam. All applicants must score at least 67.5% in order to pass. Alabama Contractors License Reciprocity

 

contractors license reciprocityThe State of Alabama Licensing Board has reciprocity with Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee. Any applicant holding a license in good standing in a comparable classification in another state recognized by the respective agency as a reciprocity state may have the trade portion of the examination waived upon written certification from that state in which the applicant is licensed. The proposed qualified individual for the applicant shall be the same individual who is duly qualified for the license currently issued to the applicant by the reciprocal state licensing board. Applicants must comply with all other Alabama licensing requirements. The business law portion of the examination shall not be waived. Application must be in this office for 30 days before receiving license through reciprocity. More info here.
